Queen's Domain Tower of Knowledge: Beacon Puzzle Walkthrough

Solve the Queen's Domain Tower of Knowledge: light three beacons, open the balcony door with gargoyles 3 and 7, and reach Wourha's study.

Last Updated: 2026-11-04
The short version

The Tower of Knowledge is the third major region. Light the three gargoyle beacons outside with the Azure Torch to open the tower door. Inside, on the balcony, light only gargoyle 3 and gargoyle 7. Lighting any other gargoyle starts a fight. The correct pair opens the passage to the upper fast-travel point and Knowledge Keeper Wourha's study, where the Storm Gem sits on the grand staircase.

The Tower of Knowledge is the point where Queen's Domain stops asking you to survive and starts asking you to read. The puzzle is not a riddle with a clue in a book; it is a test of whether you have been paying attention to the beacons you passed on the approach. This guide gives the order and the failure states.

Before you enter

You need:

  • The Azure Torch. It is the tool that lights the gargoyle beacons. Without it, the outside beacons stay dark and the door does not open.
  • Access to the third region. The tower is not reachable from the starting shore; follow the main route until the architecture changes to the pale stone and narrow bridges of the third area.
  • A stocked Elixir supply. The balcony puzzle can drop you into a fight if you light the wrong gargoyle, and the tower's interior has no save point until the upper level.
  • Patience for a one-way route. The tower's central staircase can be rotated, and the route back is not always the route you came in.

The Queen's Domain walkthrough covers the route to the third region if you are not there yet. The map guide marks the fast-travel points, including the one the tower unlocks.

Step 1: Light the three outside beacons

Three gargoyle beacons stand outside the tower. Each one needs to be lit with the Azure Torch. The order does not matter; what matters is that all three are burning before you try the door.

Walk the perimeter and check each statue's mouth. A lit beacon has a visible flame and a warmer light on the stone. If one refuses to light, you are either too far away or aiming at the wrong part of the statue; stand close and aim at the mouth.

When all three are lit, the tower door opens. There is no confirmation prompt and no cutscene. The door simply becomes usable.

All three, not two

The door checks the full set. Two lit beacons are not enough, and the third is easy to miss if you approach from the side path rather than the main bridge.

Step 2: Read the balcony gargoyles

Inside, the main hall leads to a balcony with a row of gargoyle heads. This is the actual puzzle. The game does not tell you which ones to light, and the wrong choice summons enemies.

The solution is:

  • Light gargoyle 3.
  • Light gargoyle 7.
  • Leave every other gargoyle dark.

Number them from the left as you face the row. The two correct gargoyles are not adjacent, which is why players who light the first few in order fail. If you light a wrong one, deal with the fight, then reset the room by leaving and re-entering.

When both correct gargoyles are lit, a passage opens behind the balcony. It leads upward to the tower's upper fast-travel point and to the corridor outside Wourha's study.

Do not fight every gargoyle

The enemies are not the puzzle. Fighting them costs resources and does not advance the door state. If you trigger a fight, reset the room rather than clearing every statue.

Step 3: Find Wourha's study and the Storm Gem

The passage from the balcony brings you to the Knowledge Keeper's floor. Wourha's study is the room with the shelves and the desk; the Storm Gem is on the grand staircase beside the study, not inside a chest and not on the desk.

Pick it up. The gem is the key to the Holy Sword's special attack meter, and it also unlocks the Raging Tempest achievement. The Storm Gem guide explains what changes in combat.

The upper fast-travel point activates when you reach this floor. Use it before you go deeper; the next section is a one-way route until you open the archive doors.

Step 4: The locked doors and the Forbidden Archives Key

After you take the Storm Gem, you will meet two locked doors. They are not opened by the gem. The key is the Forbidden Archives Key, carried by a dying soldier elsewhere in the tower.

The route is easy to miss because it starts below the staircase:

  1. Airdash to the hidden platform under the grand staircase. The ledge is deliberately out of sight from the main landing.
  2. Pull the lever on the platform. This rotates the central staircase 180 degrees.
  3. Take the central elevator down. The descent is the only way to reach the soldier's level.
  4. Find the dying soldier and take the Forbidden Archives Key.
  5. Return to the upper level and open the two doors.

Inside is the Forbidden Archives, the tower's final section. The library guide covers the archive's books and the lore they add; this page stops at the door.

What the tower unlocks

Reward Where it is What it does
Upper fast-travel point After the balcony passage Shortens the return trip to the tower
Storm Gem Grand staircase beside Wourha's study Unlocks the Holy Sword special attack meter
Raging Tempest achievement Awarded with the Storm Gem Trophy/achievement progress
Forbidden Archives Behind the two locked doors Lore, loot and the tower's final section

The Storm Gem is the reason most players come. It changes the sword's combat options, but it does not make the tower's enemies trivial. The special attack is a resource, not a free win.

Common mistakes

  • Lighting gargoyles 1 and 2 because they are closest. The correct pair is 3 and 7.
  • Leaving before the upper fast-travel activates. The tower is a long walk back.
  • Looking for the Storm Gem in a chest. It is on the staircase, beside the study.
  • Trying to open the two doors with the gem. You need the Forbidden Archives Key from the soldier below.
  • Missing the hidden platform under the stairs. The lever is the only way to rotate the staircase.

FAQ

How many gargoyles do you light in the Tower of Knowledge? Two inside the tower: gargoyle 3 and gargoyle 7. Outside, you light all three beacons with the Azure Torch.

What happens if you light the wrong gargoyle? You trigger a fight. The door state does not advance, so reset the room and light only 3 and 7.

Where is the Storm Gem? On the grand staircase beside Knowledge Keeper Wourha's study, after you open the balcony passage.

Do you need the Storm Gem to open the archive doors? No. The doors need the Forbidden Archives Key, which is on a dying soldier reached by rotating the staircase and taking the central elevator down.

Is the Tower of Knowledge optional? It is part of the third region's critical path, and the Storm Gem is a permanent combat upgrade. Treat it as required if you want the Holy Sword's full moveset.
