Queen's Domain Storm Gem: How to Use It and What It Unlocks
How to get and use the Queen's Domain Storm Gem: where it is in the Tower of Knowledge, how the special attack meter works, and why it is not a Wind Gem.
The Storm Gem is a key item in the Tower of Knowledge, found on the grand staircase beside Knowledge Keeper Wourha's study. Picking it up is the whole activation step: it permanently unlocks the special attack meter for the Holy Sword Endu, and the same meter works with the Soul Bound Endu. It also awards the Raging Tempest achievement. You do not equip it, socket it or take it to a blacksmith.
The Storm Gem is one of the few upgrades in Queen's Domain that changes combat without changing your build. That makes it easy to misunderstand: players expect a gem slot, a menu, or a vendor. There is none. The gem is a flag that turns on a HUD element, and the HUD element is the actual ability.

What the Storm Gem actually does
Before the gem, the Holy Sword Endu is a traversal tool with a normal melee moveset. After the gem, a special attack meter appears on the HUD. When the meter is full, the sword can spend it on a special attack.
The confirmed effects:
- Unlocks the special attack meter for the Holy Sword Endu.
- Works with the Soul Bound Endu, so a later sword upgrade does not lose the ability.
- Awards the Raging Tempest achievement on pickup.
- Persists as a permanent unlock, not a consumable.
What the game does not document:
- the exact damage formula of the special attack;
- the exact meter-fill rate;
- the official name of the input on every control scheme.
The HUD and the controls screen are the authority for the input. If the meter is full and the attack does not fire, check that you are in combat and that the sword is in its combat stance rather than its gliding stance.
You cannot "use" the Storm Gem from the inventory. There is no use prompt. Once it is in your key items, the meter is part of the HUD for the rest of the run.
Where to find it
The Storm Gem is in the Tower of Knowledge, the third major region. The route:
- Light the three outside beacons with the Azure Torch.
- Inside, on the balcony, light only gargoyle 3 and gargoyle 7.
- Take the passage to the upper floor and the upper fast-travel point.
- Find Wourha's study.
- Look on the grand staircase beside the study. The gem sits there, not in a chest.
The full puzzle route is in the Tower of Knowledge walkthrough. If you are already past the balcony and cannot find the gem, you are probably looking on the study desk rather than the staircase.
The gem is on the main route to the Forbidden Archives, so you do not need to detour. Pick it up before you rotate the staircase; the archive route is one-way until you open the two doors.
How to use the special attack
The practical sequence:
- Fight with the Holy Sword Endu. The meter fills as you use the sword in combat.
- Watch the HUD. The meter has a visible full state; the sword's wings are the other tell that the weapon is active.
- Use the sword's special input when the meter is full. The exact button is shown on the controls screen. The game does not label it as "Storm Gem" in the menu, which is why players miss the connection.
- Spend it, then refill. The meter is not a cooldown with a fixed timer; it is a resource you build and spend.
The special attack is strongest against groups and against enemies that punish a slow normal swing. It is not a panic button: the wind-up is long enough that a boss can interrupt it if you fire it at the wrong moment. The combat guide covers the timing windows.
Test the input on a lone shore enemy before you use it in a boss room. The animation is distinctive, and you want to recognise the wind-up before you rely on it.
Storm Gem vs Wind Gems
These are different items and the names are easy to mix up.
| Item | What it does | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Storm Gem | Unlocks the Holy Sword special attack meter | Tower of Knowledge, beside Wourha's study |
| Wind Gems | Add charges to Wind Dash | Separate collectibles in the world |
Wind Gems do not unlock the special attack, and the Storm Gem does not increase your dash count. If a guide tells you to collect Wind Gems for the Storm Gem, it is conflating two systems.
The Holy Sword Endu guide covers the traversal side, including how upgrades extend flight distance. The Storm Gem is a combat unlock, not a flight upgrade.
Does it carry over to a new sword?
Yes. The gem's effect is tied to the save, not to a specific sword instance. When you obtain the Soul Bound Endu, the special attack meter remains available. That is why the gem is worth picking up even if you are still using the starting blade when you find it.
If you are replaying the tower on a new save, you must pick it up again. It is a key item, not an account-wide unlock.
Is the Storm Gem missable?
It is on the critical route, but the tower has a point of no return once you rotate the staircase and descend. If you reach the archive doors without the gem, go back up before you open them. The gem is beside the study, not behind a locked door, so the recovery is short.
The game does not warn you before the staircase rotates. Treat the upper floor as your last chance to sweep the study and the staircase.
What the achievement requires
Raging Tempest is awarded when you pick up the Storm Gem. You do not need to land the special attack, upgrade the sword, or finish the tower. If the achievement does not appear, check that you actually picked up the gem rather than reading a nearby note.
The achievements and completion guide lists the other missable trophies if you are cleaning up after the credits.
FAQ
Where is the Storm Gem in Queen's Domain? On the grand staircase beside Knowledge Keeper Wourha's study in the Tower of Knowledge.
How do you use the Storm Gem? Pick it up. It unlocks the Holy Sword's special attack meter automatically. When the meter is full, use the sword's special input; the exact button is on the controls screen.
Is the Storm Gem the same as a Wind Gem? No. The Storm Gem unlocks the special attack meter. Wind Gems add Wind Dash charges.
Does the Storm Gem work with the Soul Bound Endu? Yes. The unlock is tied to the save, so the meter remains when you obtain the later sword.
Can you miss the Storm Gem? It is on the main route, but the staircase rotation creates a one-way section. Pick it up before you descend to the Forbidden Archives Key.
